Residential Blue Box programs in Ontario are moving to a new collection system that is fully funded and operated by producers of recycling materials. The new collection system will make recycling easier by standardizing what can be recycled across Ontario.
Starting April 1, 2025, Hamilton’s Blue Box program will be operated by Circular Materials Ontario. This includes the collection and processing of blue box materials in Hamilton.
The following properties will have recycling collected by Circular Materials as part of the new blue box program:
- Low density residential / single family homes
- Multi-residential properties / apartment buildings
- Specified non-profit / municipal long-term and retirement homes
- Specific public spaces, such as parks, playgrounds, sidewalks
- Public / private schools
- Residential components of mixed-use buildings
The City of Hamilton will maintain curbside collection of:
- Garbage
- Bulk garbage
- Organics (green bin)
- Leaf and yard waste, including Christmas trees
- Recycling collection from businesses
